Let me start by saying that I am Bristolian born and bred, and have spent most of my life in this wonderful city. I am enormously proud of my home town and want to see it be recognised for all of the great things that are happening in it. However the performance of our state schools is of great concern, and a long-running problem.

In September 2004 the BBC reported on research from the London University’s Institute of Education. They highlight some interesting points about people’s motivations…
…And the widespread use of private tuition did not seem to be linked to any feeling that schools were not doing their job.
Fewer than one in five parents who paid for private tuition said that they were motivated by weaknesses with teaching in school.
An even smaller proportion – only about one in 10 – said that tuition was compensating for a lack of support from school.
Back in September 2004 The Times reported on research by the Institute of Education at London University, which found that overall 27% of state school pupils were being privately tutored. It would be interesting to know how these figures have changed over the last few years.
