In Brown backs ‘personal’ learning the BBC reports a speech by Gordon Brown to the Labour Party annual conference in which he backs increased provision of ‘personal’ learning within schools. Learning personal to each pupil — educational available to all, not one —size fits all, but responding to individual needs.

…And the widespread use of private tuition did not seem to be linked to any feeling that schools were not doing their job.

Tutoring soars for state pupils - Times Online

Back in September 2004 The Times reported on research by the Institute of Education at London University, which found that overall 27% of state school pupils were being privately tutored. It would be interesting to know how these figures have changed over the last few years.
