Private tuition for pupils is a major growth industry

A report from the Telegraph from early 2005 apparently about the same research from the Institute of Education as reported by the Times and the BBC.

BBC NEWS | Education | Private lessons for 27% of pupils

In September 2004 the BBC reported on research from the London University’s Institute of Education. They highlight some interesting points about people’s motivations…

…And the widespread use of private tuition did not seem to be linked to any feeling that schools were not doing their job.

An even smaller proportion – only about one in 10 – said that tuition was compensating for a lack of support from school.

Tutoring soars for state pupils – Times Online

Back in September 2004 The Times reported on research by the Institute of Education at London University, which found that overall 27% of state school pupils were being privately tutored. It would be interesting to know how these figures have changed over the last few years.
